LUCEDALE, Miss. (AP) — Officials in Mississippi say five people have been rescued after running into problems while canoeing on a river.
George County Sheriff Keith Havard said the people on the water Sunday ranged in age from 17 to the mid-30s.
Havard says the group was boating when the waters began to get rough. He says their canoes capsized, leaving them stranded on the banks of the river.
After swimming to land, the boaters called a family member who contacted authorities.
Search and rescue teams from both the George and Jackson County sheriff departments responded, searching an area near Highway 612 close to the Jackson County line.
Havard said all five people were safely rescued and walked away without any major injuries.
