More rain to drench already sopping middle Mississippi

A cold front moving across Mississippi today is expected to bring another round of potentially dangerous rainfall.

The bulk of central Mississippi — from Cleveland south to Hattiesburg and from the western state line to the eastern one — are at risk for up to 5 inches of rain. Locally, the rainfall totals could be higher, National Weather Service forecasters predict.

The rainfall could come down quickly, forecasters say, leading to potential flash flooding.

The rain comes just a week after up to 12 inches of rainfall was dumped across the same portion of Mississippi, causing Gov. Phil Bryant to declare a state of emergency late Tuesday.

Already flood-swollen rivers may worsen or stay at high levels with the rain expected Wednesday afternoon and into Friday morning.
