The Delta State University family is mourning the sudden, tragic loss of one of its professors, his wife and one of their four children.

DSU Physics professor Adam Johanson, 35, was killed Thursday when his family’s SUV careened off a Texas interstate near Amarillo and collided with an oncoming vehicle. The family was returning to Mississippi after a trip to visit family and friends in Las Vegas.

Also killed in the wreck were Johanson’s wife, Elizabeth, and their 8-year-old daughter, Jane. The couple’s three other children, ages 3, 5, and 12, were treated for injuries and later released.

A GoFundMe campaign has been setup by the couple’s family to help pay for memorial and funeral arrangements along with support services for the surviving children.

Delta State announced Friday that the university will fly its flags at half-staff in memory of the family from Saturday through Monday.

Adam Johanson was the director of DSU’s Wiley Planetarium. He earned a Ph.D in physics and astronomy from Brigham Young University in 2015.
