TUPELO — A Mississippi man has surrendered to police in a hit-and-run that killed an Alabama woman last month.

News outlets reported 19-year-old Tyler Jernigan of Nettleton turned himself in to police in Tupelo on Tuesday and has been charged with leaving the scene of an accident with an injury.

Officers were called to road Dec. 20 and found a woman who appeared to have been struck by a car. Forty-two-year-old Brandi Oliver of Birmingham, Alabama, was killed.

Jernigan’s attorney described the collision as a “tragic accident.”

Attorney Tony Farese says it was raining very hard and Jernigan didn’t see what happened. Farese says his client thought he had hit a deer when he saw windshield damage.

Jernigan faces up to 20 years in prison and a $10,000 fine if he’s convicted.
