AMORY — A northeast Mississippi resident shot and killed a man who had broken into his home.

Monroe County Sheriff Cecil Cantrell tells WTVA-TV that 38-year-old Andrew Culver died in a residence near Amory.

Cantrell says residents told deputies that they awoke to growling noises and a male resident found Culver in the kitchen around 1 a.m. Friday, after Culver appeared to have kicked in the door.

The sheriff says the homeowner held Culver at gunpoint with a shotgun, but that Culver charged the resident when informed that deputies were on their way.

Cantrell says the resident then shot him, and Culver died before deputies arrived.
