Get out your mittens, Mississippi. It’s going to get cold this weekend and maybe a little snowy.

A low pressure front will move across Mississippi this week bringing frigid temperatures and a chance of snow for northern parts of the state this weekend.

Cold, arctic air that will come in behind the front may turn some of the front’s precipitation into the wintry variety, National Weather Service meteorologists are predicting.

Exact timing and location of the snow chance is still too early to predict, forecasters say. At the moment the greatest chance seems to be sometimes Saturday or early Sunday.

Temperatures are expected to plunge as well with temperatures well below normals for January.

In northern parts of the state the high temperatures forecast for Sunday are expected to be 30 degrees colder the day prior. Temperatures may struggle to get above freezing in the northern-most areas of the state on Sunday with lows in the teens.

Toward the middle of Mississippi high temperatures Sunday will be the mid to upper 30s, with lows temperatures in the low 20s.

In South Mississippi, highs Sunday will be in the mid-40s with lows in the mid-20s.
