King’s Tavern, a building that dates to before the Revolutionary War and is consider the oldest structure standing in the more than 300-year-old Mississippi River town, has served travelers for literally centuries.

The tavern earned its name from New Yorker Richard King who moved his family to Natchez, acquired the building and ran it as a successful tavern and inn. The building is currently owned by the Charboneau family in Natchez.

Regina Charboneau is a renowned chef and restaurateur. The family owns a rum distillery next door, Charboneau Distillery.

Travel & Leisure writers selected King’s Tavern as Mississippi’s representative for a list of coziest restaurants in each state.

The magazine’s editors wrote:

Some say King’s Tavern dates back to 1789; others, 1769. Regardless, almost everyone agrees that it’s the oldest building in Natchez. It was originally settled as a British fort, and then, over the next two hundred-odd years, it operated as an inn and a private home. It became a restaurant and tavern in 1973, closest to its current iteration, and has remained that way since. Some say it’s haunted; we believe it. Still, despite over two centuries of compelling history, the food and drink don’t take a backseat to their settings. Get the woodfired brisket-topped flatbread, which is closer to a pizza in its substantialness. It’s drizzled with horseradish cream. There are also woodfired crawfish pot pies and traditional pizzas, with fresh mozzarella and basil, or Brussels sprout and bacon.
