The results are in, and they might surprise you. WalletHub released its 2019 ranks for the best and worst cities in the country for football fans, with a few different categories.

Mississippi State University’s home town of Starkville was the top Mississippi football town, coming in at No. 42.

The tiny town of Fayette came in just after at No. 43. Fayette is near to Alcorn State University, so perhaps that’s the connection to the high ranking.

Ole Miss home Oxford ranked No. 82 in overall towns.

And the home of the Southern Miss Golden Eagles, Hattiesburg, came in well behind at No. 136.

Itta Bena, home of Mississippi Valley State University, came in at No. 149, ahead of Jackson State University’s capital city home at No. 177.

In the small cities category, Starkville was No. 9, Fayette No. 10 and Oxford No. 40.

Rankings are derived from a formula of over twenty different metrics that values team performance, ticket prices, attendance and fan engagement. Any city with at least one football team, be it an NFL team or an FBS or FCS team, were considered. The small cities ranked must list a population below 100,000 people.
