A top-ranking Jackson firefighter has been shot while lying in bed inside his house.

Jackson police say Division Chief Craig Odems was shot just after midnight on Monday morning.

WAPT-TV reports the 53-year-old Odems was taken to a hospital where he underwent surgery and remains in intensive care Monday. Jackson Fire Chief Willie Owens says Odems has told firefighters that the bullet was removed and he expects to make a full recovery.

Owens says a stray bullet came through Odems’ daughter’s bedroom window, through the wall to Odems’ bedroom and hit him in the side.

Police spokesman Sgt. Roderick Holmes says investigators are unsure what happened or whether the shooter intended to hit Odems. An unknown person was seen walking in the area before the shooting.
