An off-duty Memphis Police officer shot and killed a man who stabbed the officer in the neck Tuesday afternoon in a road rage incident.

The two men were involved in the road rage incident near Hurt Road and Goodman Street in Horn Lake, just south of Memphis at approximately 4 p.m., Fox 13 TV news reported.

The two drivers apparently pulled into a Walgreens drug store parking lot. That’s when one driver approached the other and stabbed him in the neck.

The stabbed man, who was an off-duty police officer with the Memphis Police Department, apparently pulled a gun and shot the man with the knife once in the chest.

The DeSoto Times-Tribune newspaper reported the man killed was 28-year-old Athens Christopher Trey Mahrt of Horn Lake, Mississippi.

The officer was not identified because the police said he was the victim in the case. The police officer was transported to an area hospital where he was listed in critical condition late Tuesday.
