Already drenched portions of northern Mississippi, particularly the Mississippi Delta, are at extreme risk of flooding Saturday as more thunderstorms are expected to dump up to 5 inches of rain across the region.

The National Weather Service’s Jackson office predicts areas in the Mississippi Delta including the cities of Greenville, Greenwood and Clarksdale could receive between 3 to 5 inches of additional rain on Saturday.

With rivers already swelled from rains earlier in the week, that new rainfall puts large areas at risk for flash floods.

In addition to the rain threat, the storm front moving through has the potential to create tornadoes, “Some possibly strong,” forecasters said.

Hail up to golf-ball size is also possible, the National Weather Service predicted. High wind gust, some up to nearly 50 mph are possible along and north of the Natchez Trace corridor.
