Police in Mississippi were investigating a Gulfport burglary when they found 100 guinea pigs and the skeletal remains of more than one dog inside a nearby home.
The Sun Herald of Biloxi reports Gulfport police didn’t immediately release the owner’s identity, but say she’s charged with offenses including animal cruelty.
Police say she wasn’t selling the animals. It’s unclear why she had so many.
Officers investigating the mobile home and RV community burglary on Thursday smelled something foul and followed their noses.
They found what the director of animal services for the Humane Society of South Mississippi says were “deplorable” conditions inside a nearby trailer where kennels filled with waste were stacked floor to ceiling.
Director Casey Harrison says the animals will be evaluated, treated and later available for adoption.
