Iconic early 20th century, Mississippi school building burns to ground

An iconic, small-town gym built in 1912 burned to the ground Sunday morning.

Firefighters from four different departments responded to the blaze that engulfed the former Carson High School gym in Jefferson Davis County.

Built in 1912, the structure was used as a gym for the high school until it closed in the late 1950s.

After its life as a school gym, the building, along Mississippi 42, was transformed in the Carson Skating Rink were it entertained young and old alike for several decades.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
