A levee in northeast Mississippi has collapsed after months of rain, flooding farmland and washing out part of a county road.

WTVA-TV reports the levee broke in Chickasaw County.

One lane of a county road washed away as water from the breached levee flooded the surrounding area.

Crews with the Tombigbee River Valley Water Management District surveyed the area.

They are focused on building the levee back up so farmers can plant crops this spring.

Chickasaw County Road Manager Doug Winter says the large amount of rain the region has experienced in recent months weakened the levee over time.

The county had 38 roads damaged during heavy rains in late February.
