A man accused of shooting a Mississippi sheriff’s deputy multiple times with a rifle held police at bay in a standoff for hours Friday night before ultimately killing himself as law enforcement officers watched, a Memphis TV station reported.

The incident occurred in Marshall County in northern Mississippi.

Neither the suspect’s identity nor that of the wounded sheriff’s deputy have been released, FOX 13 TV reported.

The situation began when sheriff’s deputies confronted the man as part of a drug investigation. The wounded deputy was reportedly shot two or three times with a rifle and was airlifted from the scene to a hospital. He’s expected to recover.

The man barricaded himself in the house for hours.

Deputies cut power to the house during the hours-long standoff. Dickerson says the suspect emerged about 10:30 p.m., asked to speak to the sheriff, then shot himself.

The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation will take over the investigation.
