A Mississippi man was charged with murder after a Saturday night shooting in Lamar County, local media reported.

Norman Andrew “Andy” Whiddon Jr. of Purvis was charged with murder, aggravated assault and felony eluding after police believe he shot a man in the head and wounded a woman.

The man shot in the head, James Edward Herrin of Lumberton, died, the Hattiesburg American newspaper reported.

Police say they were called after receiving a report about multiple gunshots. They were given a description of the suspect’s vehicle and located it, but Whiddon fled police in initially.

Lamar County Jail records indicate Whiddon was being held Monday without bond.
