Missing elderly man believed to be found dead in North Carolina

The search for an elderly Mississippi man missing for days in North Carolina has been called off after authorities believe they have located the man’s body in a field.

Nathaniel Brookins apparently wandering off from a house in which he was staying with his family near Hillsborough, North Carolina. He was reported missing on Friday and family members believe the 91-year-old Brookins may have early signs of dementia and may have been trying to return home to Mississippi. He lived in the Jackson area.

The Orange County (N.C.) Sheriff’s Office reported the discovery of his body late Monday night.

“It is with great sadness we report the search for 91 year old Mr. Nathaniel Brookins is over,” the department posted on social media. “A male matching his description was found in a field off Lawrence Road. The investigation is ongoing as to the cause of death. More information will be provided as it becomes available. We are grateful for the community’s concern and wish we had different news to report.”

Deputies from the Orange County Sheriff’s Office (OCSO) conducted an active investigation throughout the weekend, including using K9 units for tracking, searching with an ATV and surveying the surrounding areas by knocking on every door in the immediate neighborhood.

In addition, deputies shared a photo of Brookins with all area law enforcement agencies, checked with store clerks at Wal-Mart, Sheets and other high traffic businesses, and they checked area hospitals.
