A Mississippi county sheriff’s deputy was shot in the leg last week while confronting an armed person who refused to be arrested, held law enforcement at bay and fired a gun at them before eventually giving up.

The injured Jefferson Davis County Sheriff’s Office deputy was recovering a home and the suspect was arrested.

After the initial shooting at approximately 9 p.m. Friday, deputies reported, the man refused to come out of his house trailer.

Deputies surrounded the trailer and began trying to negotiate with him to surrender. At one point the suspect opened the front door and fired additional shots at the officers, who returned fire.

A regional SWAT team used an armored truck to make entry to the trailer. More shots were fired at the officers and negotiations began again, the sheriff’s office reported. Eventually the suspect surrendered and no one else but the single deputy was injured. Neither the name of the suspect nor the suspect in custody has been released.
