First-grader killed after being struck by car near school Monday

A Mississippi first-grader was killed Monday night after being struck by a car near a school.
Laurel Police Chief Tommy Cox told WDAM TV on Tuesday that a child was struck by a car and killed. The accident occurred between the football field and Laurel High School at approximately 6 p.m. Monday.
The school district issued a statement on Facebook referencing the accident.
“Due to the tragic death of one of our students, state testing scheduled for tomorrow, May 7, 2019, at Nora Davis Magnet School and Laurel Middle School has been postponed and will be rescheduled,” the school posted. “Other schools will be sensitive to the emotional needs of our students and will make decisions on testing as needed. Additional crisis counseling support will be provided at all schools in the district.”
