A young Tallahatchie County mother and her child were killed in Panola County about noon on Saturday when her car hit an 18-wheel truck and trailer, authorities said.

Coroner Gracie Grant-Gulledge said Diamond Wyatt, age unavailable, and her daughter Sumner Wyatt, 2, died at the scene just after noon on I-55.

Batesville Fire Department was assisted by county departments who used cutting tools to free the deceased.

Preliminary reports indicate Wyatt’s car was traveling south on the interstate when it crossed the median and struck a pickup truck and the big rig.

The road was wet and the car may have hydroplaned across the median, officials at the scene said. No ruling was made and no one was charged or cited after the accident.

Three people were in the pickup truck and all were treated at the scene. The driver of the big truck was uninjured.

The accident happened just past the Pope-Water Valley Rd. overpass south of the Pope exit.
