A 74-year-old Mississippi man has been jailed on murder charges after police say he shot and killed his 73-year-old girlfriend, local media reported.

Hugh McLaurin was arrested and charged with murder after police responded to a 911 call and found Margaret V. Pierce at the scene suffering from multiple gunshot wounds, WLBT-TV reported Thursday.

The man told police he shot the woman because he was being attacked.
