A child shot another child at the home of a north Mississippi sheriff.

WCBI-TV reports the grandson of interim sheriff Andy McCants was shot while he and his older brother were playing with a gun.

Sheriff’s Deputy Dillion Cates tells WTVA-TV the wounded child was flown by helicopter to a Jackson hospital. Cates says the child was injured in the chest by a small-caliber pistol.

A Department of Public Safety spokesman says no criminal charges are expected. McCants tells the Clarion Ledger the shooting was ruled an accident, declining further comment.

It’s unclear who owns the gun or how the children obtained it.

McCants was named acting sheriff in January after Sheriff Tim Mitchell was charged with stealing guns and drugs, seeking sex with inmates and threatening employees.
