Man charged with front porch armed robbery
A Natchez man was being held in the Adams County Jail on Friday on a charge of armed robbery after a resident of Oak Street said he was robbed at gunpoint while sitting on his front porch Friday morning, police said.
Fernando Williams is being charged with armed robbery and possession of a weapon by a convicted felon, police said. No bond has been set.
The armed robbery, police said, was reported at 11:30 a.m. Friday.
“The victim said he was sitting on his front porch when an unknown black male walked into his yard with his shirt off and pointed a small caliber chrome pistol believed to be an automatic,” a police report on the incident states. “The suspect told the victim to go into his house and give him his money. The victim gave the suspect an undisclosed amount of cash. The suspect then punched the victim in the mouth with a closed fist and left. The victim then called the police.”
A police officer on patrol later spotted the suspect, police said.
“Natchez police officer V. Bates was patrolling the area of Old Washington Road when he spotted a person matching the description of the suspect,” the police report states. “A foot pursuit ensued and the suspect was later apprehended on Sunflower by officer Bates.”
The weapon and stolen property were recovered.
Police chief Walter Armstrong commended his police force for swift arrests in Friday’s armed robbery and other recent arrests.
“I would like to commend the patrol division and criminal investigation division for the quick work of bringing closure to these cases,” Armstrong said, adding that officers also made a quick arrest in a May 14 shooting incident on Dumas Drive and the arrest of a man who shot his gun in the air on Homochitto Street on Wednesday night. “I commend these officers as well as the community for what we have seen in arrests and bringing closure to these cases. It is beneficial to have the community working with us and security cameras are helping.”
