Workers of a Hattiesburg, Mississippi, business are calling for better wages and the creation of a union.

WDAM-TV reports several Maximus workers protested outside the call center Thursday as corporate officials met inside the site.

The organizing director of Communication Workers of America, Sedjerick Lee, says unionization could lead to better pay. The workers’ current baseline pay is $10.60 per hour.

The site previously was owned by General Dynamics Information Technology. Maximus bought it in November.

A 2018 Communication Workers of America statement says workers were calling for unionization even before the site changed hands.

Hattiesburg Area Development Partnership President Chad Newell says Maximus is one of the largest employers in the city.
