Mississippi police remain on alert after a threat was made against them by a gang after a suspect was shot and killed last week during an arrest in Memphis.

The Mississippi Department of Public Safety issued a warning to law enforcement officers Thursday after learning of a threat allegedly made by members of the Gangster Disciples street gang.

“We received credible intelligence that a threat had been issued on law enforcement pursuant to the events that occurred in the city of Memphis on Wednesday evening,” said Mississippi Commissioner of Public Safety Marshall Fisher in a statement Friday.

The threat came after U.S. Marshals shot suspect Brandon Webber in Memphis while trying to arrest him for charges he shot a Mississippi man and stole his car. Marshals said Webber tried to ram arresting officers with his car, then brandished a weapon, prompting the shooting.

The incident sparked a violent night of protests in Memphis with more than two dozens police officers injured after a crowd of protesters threw rocks and other items at them.
