At least six inmates were injured in fights over two days at a Mississippi jail.

Local news outlets report inmates used pipes and homemade knives as weapons as they brawled at the Hinds County Detention Center in Raymond.

Sheriff Victor Mason confirms at least six inmates Friday were taken to hospitals. Three were released.

Mason says the inmates began fighting around 12:30 a.m. Friday over contraband. Other officials tell WLBT-TV that the unrest is at least in part a clash between two rival gangs — the Vice Lords and the Gangster Disciples.

The sheriff didn’t name inmates involved or their injuries. It’s unclear if they will face additional charges.

The jail’s conditions have been the subject of federal scrutiny, with the county promising improvements.
