Worker killed as trench collapses, burying him alive

One person has died following the collapse of a trench in the Taylor neighborhood of Plein Air on Monday.

At approximately 1:34 p.m. Monday afternoon, the Lafayette County Fire Department, Oxford Fire Department, Lafayette County Sheriff’s Department and CareMed were dispatched to Mosaic Drive in Taylor for a trench collapse with one victim trapped.

On arrival, one victim was confirmed to be trapped in the trench. Members from both LCFD and OFD then utilized trench rescue tactics and equipment from both departments to extricate the victim, according to a statement from LCFD.

At approximately 2:36 p.m., the victim was extricated from the trench and pronounced deceased. Custody was then taken over by the Lafayette County Coroner Rocky Kennedy.
