Indictment: Ex-deputy said sheriff deserved a ‘whipping’

A former sheriff’s deputy in northern Mississippi has been indicted on a charge of retaliation against a public servant for allegedly threatening to harm his boss.

The attorney general’s office says in a news release Friday that 45-year-old Mike Mayhew of Plantersville told a witness that Lee County Sheriff Jim Johnson deserved “an a**-whipping” after Johnson told state officials that Mayhew submitted time sheets for work the deputy didn’t do.

Mayhew was indicted June 28. He turned himself in Wednesday to the Lee County Sheriff’s Office and was released from jail that day after posting $5,000 bond.

A message left Friday with Mayhew’s attorney seeking comment was not immediately returned.

The attorney general’s office says Mayhew was indicted last year for filing false time sheets. He awaits trial.
