A Mississippi man who was shot by a police officer after he allegedly shot a woman and then brandished a gun at police has been arrested.

Gerry Byrd, of Natchez, Mississippi, faces multiple charges after a July 2 incident in which police say he shot a woman in the chest and left her on the side of Interstate 10 in Baton Rouge and later rammed his car into a Woodville, Mississippi, gas station before pulling a gun on police.

WBRZ-TV in Baton Rouge reports that police have charged Byrd with attempted first-degree murder, armed robbery, theft of a firearm, theft of a motor vehicle and being a felon in possession of a firearm.

The TV station reports that police believe Byrd and the victim was staying at a Port Allen motel when Byrd became aggressive and the pair decided to return to Natchez.

During the trip, allegedly the woman took a wrong turn which set Byrd off and he allegedly beat her with the pistol before he eventually shot her in the chest. Police found her walking down the interstate.

Meanwhile Byrd apparently drove himself to Woodville where he reportedly came toward police with a gun before they shot him.
