A city in the Mississippi Delta is installing speakers to play the blues or other types of regional music near downtown shops and restaurants.

Greenwood Mayor Carolyn McAdams tells the Greenwood Commonwealth the music will bring another mood, or ambience, to downtown.

The city is installing 38 speakers that should be ready in time for the Bikes, Blues & Bayous ride on Aug. 3.

In 2011, the city updated Howard Street with brick sidewalks and crosswalks and period lighting.

At the same time, it installed conduits carrying electrical wiring underground for a future speaker system.

Greenwood City Councilman Johnny Jennings says he has enjoyed outdoor speakers in other Mississippi cities. The controls for the Greenwood speakers will be in his office.
