A detective with the Magee Police Department is facing misdemeanor charges after accidentally shooting himself at Rooster’s Blues House earlier this week.

Christopher Matthew Gipson was charged with discharging a firearm within the city limits by the Oxford Police Department on Wednesday. OPD officers responded to Rooster’s Blues House around midnight on Tuesday after receiving a report that someone had fired their weapon inside a building.

When officers arrived they found Gipson had shot himself in the leg, sustaining a non-life threatening injury. He was then transported to Baptist Memorial Hospital-North Mississippi.

Rooster’s Blues House owner Scott Michael confirmed an off-duty police officer was the one who fired the weapon to The Oxford Eagle on Wednesday afternoon. Gipson was in town for a law enforcement conference taking place earlier this week.

“It was an off-duty officer who was attending a conference that happens here every summer around this time,” Michael said. “I’m happy to have them.”

Gipson is the brother of current Mississippi Agriculture Commissioner Andy Gipson. The charge will be presented in front of a municipal court judge.
