If you thought it got hot outside yesterday, weather forecasters warn it’s about to get worse.

Dangerously high heat indices are expected over the next several days, National Weather Service forecasters predict.

Today through Saturday, forecasters say high air temperatures combined with high humidity will make it feel like 106 to 110 degrees outside.

But things are expected to get more sticky Sunday through Tuesday with heat index values of between 111 and 115 across much of the western areas of Mississippi, in a swath stretching from Natchez in Southwest Mississippi all the way to up through the Delta and over to areas in north central Mississippi.

Such high heat indices make threats of heat exhaustion and heat stroke much more likely if people (and pets) are not adequately cooled and kept hydrated.

Experts say to use extra care if you have to work or spend time outdoors today including:

Wearing light, loose-fitting clothing.

Drinking plenty of fluids (likely more than you think you need).

Take breaks to get out of the direct sun.

Stay in air-conditioned spaces if possible, or during breaks.

Check regularly on relative and neighbors, particularly the elderly or infirm.
