Heat advisories and excessive heat warnings were issued today for all 82 counties in Mississippi, from the Mississippi Gulf Coast to the northern border with Tennessee and from the east to the west area of the state in between.

Dangerously high heat indices are expected today, National Weather Service forecasters predict.

Through tonight forecasters say high air temperatures combined with high humidity will make it feel like 106 to 117 degrees outside.

Although the temperatures are expected to remain high through the week, heat indices will lower as humidity levels are expected to drop this week.

Such high heat indices make threats of heat exhaustion and heat stroke much more likely if people (and pets) are not adequately cooled and kept hydrated.

Experts say to use extra care if you have to work or spend time outdoors today including:

  • Wearing light, loose-fitting clothing.
  • Drinking plenty of fluids (likely more than you think you need).
  • Take breaks to get out of the direct sun.
  • Stay in air-conditioned spaces if possible, or during breaks.
  • Check regularly on relative and neighbors, particularly the elderly or infirm, and pets and livestock.
