The Mississippi State Department of Health is restricting the license of a child care facility after a 5-month-old baby boy was found not breathing and later died at a hospital.

The state health officer, Dr. Thomas Dobbs, tells news outlets Wednesday that operators of Crossgates Methodist Children’s Center contacted Brandon police Tuesday morning about the baby’s condition. The boy was taken by ambulance to a nearby emergency room but could not be resuscitated.

Heath Department officials say they don’t know whether the baby had any pre-existing medical problems.

The department has indefinitely suspended the center’s license to care for children less than a year old. Dobbs says the center has been open since 1992.

An investigation continues.
