A well-known Louisiana fishing charter service owner died Sunday after the seaplane he was apparently piloting crashed off the Louisiana Gulf Coast.

Captain Theophile Bourgeois was reportedly killed. He owned Bourgeois Fishing Charters in Barataria, Louisiana.

The U.S. Coast Guard was called in after receiving a report from the company just before 3 p.m. Sunday that communication with the seaplane had been lost. The report said three people were on board and the plane’s last known position was near the Chandaleur Sound.

The Coast Guard dispatched an MH-65 Dolphin Helicopter aircrew from Coast Guard Air Station New Orleans and searched for the seaplane.

The aircrew recovered two of the people from the water and transported them to University Medical Center in New Orleans. One of the passengers, which New Orleans media outlets identified as Bourgeois, was declared deceased upon arrival.

An MH-65 Dolphin Helicopter aircrew from Air Station New Orleans later rescued the third passenger. The passenger was transported to University Medical Center.

The cause of the incident is under investigation.
