Mississippi police investigators say they’re investigating the death of a child who was left inside a car on Friday.

Booneville Police Chief Michael Ramey said Monday that officers received a call at approximately 5 p.m. on Friday. Officers responded to the parking lot of a daycare for a call of a child locked in a car.

When officers arrived they determined the 21-month-old boy was deceased and that daycare was not involved in what led to the child’s death.

Police said they believe the child was left in the vehicle at a workplace in Booneville for several hours during the day before the car was driven to the day care facility. Weather Underground reported the high temperature in the area was 96 degrees on Friday.

Ramey said the child’s body was was sent to the state medical examiner’s office for an autopsy. Ramey said police investigators were gathering video footage and statements to determine what led to the death.
