A sheriff has resigned in northern Mississippi, two weeks after he was defeated in a party primary.

News outlets reported that Monroe County Sheriff Cecil Cantrell abruptly stepped down Tuesday. Within hours, he had cleaned out his office.

Cantrell was seeking a third term but lost the Democratic primary on Aug. 6. The candidate who defeated him, Kevin Crook, will face Republican Andy Hood in November.

Chief Deputy Curtis Knight will be interim sheriff until Monroe County supervisors name someone to serve the rest of Cantrell’s four-year term, which expires in January. Supervisors are set to meet Friday.
