Mississippi school bus wreck kills driver, several students injured, some airlifted to hospital

A school bus wrecked in north Mississippi early Tuesday as it was beginning its route. The driver is dead and seven students were injured when the bus overturned.

Local media reported the accident happened at approximately 7:20 a.m. Tuesday in Benton County, Mississippi, when authorities believe the bus driver, Chester Cole, perhaps experienced a heart attack or some other type of medical emergency.

The bus left the road and turned over after rolling into a ditch.

WREG-TV in Memphis reported Cole was killed either in the wreck or due to the possible medical condition. Seven children were on the bus at the time of the wreck, reportedly ranging in age from 7 to 13.

All seven children were taken for medical care at Olive Branch and Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital in Memphis. Reportedly two children had to be airlifted.

The extent of the children’s injuries has not been released.
