Sewage release causes state environmental agency to warn about potentially contaminated water

State environmental officials have issued warnings of potentially contaminated water in two locations in the state due to sewage released into the water.

The Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality (MDEQ) issued two water contact advisories this week.

The first is for a section of Mill Creek in Flowood, Mississippi. The advisory includes the section of Mill Creek from where it intersects Vine Drive and Lakeland Drive to where it crosses Spillway Road (see attached map).

The second advisory is for an unnamed bayou in the City of Gautier. The advisory includes the bayou from where it runs under Graveline Road and between Collin J. McRae Road and Navaho Road to where it enters Shepard State Park.

Both problem areas were caused, DEQ officials reported, because sewage lift stations were faulty allowing sewage to leak into the water.

MDEQ recommends that people avoid water contact such as swimming, wading, and fishing. People should also avoid eating fish or anything else taken from these waters until further notice.
