Two 18-year-olds shot early Sunday on heels of Mississippi city’s first homicide of 2019

A violent weekend in Vicksburg that started Saturday with the city’s first homicide of 2019 continued Sunday morning with a shooting on North Frontage Road.

At around 2:30 a.m. Sunday, officers were dispatched to the 1100 block of North Frontage Road for the report of shots fired. When officers arrived, they discovered multiple shell casings located on the ground but no victims.

Moments later, police received a call of two gunshot victims who had arrived at Merit Health River Region West Campus, 1111 North Frontage. The facility does not have an emergency room so someone at the facility called 911.

At that facility, officers found 18-year-old Shemar Keyon Anderson with a gunshot wound to the chest and Jatavius Jerome Qualls, 18, who had been shot in the hip area.

Anderson was transported by ambulance to Merit Health River Region and then taken by air ambulance to University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson. He was last listed in critical condition.

Qualls was transported to Merit Health River Region, where he was last listed in serious condition.

Authorities did confirm the two shooting victims were in the 1100 block of North Frontage Road at the time of the earlier shots fired call.
