The victim’s identity was not immediately released.

The Laurel Leader-Call newspaper reported the victim was walking along the road and had earbuds in her ears when she was struck by Evans’ truck.

The newspaper reported that Evans knew he hit something, but reportedly believed it was either a mailbox or a dog. He turned himself in once he heard of the woman’s death.

Jones County Sheriff Alex Hodge told the TV station that Evans was charged with leaving the scene of an accident, but additional charges may be added later.
