A homeowner defending their property shot a burglar late Tuesday night in Jackson, Mississippi, police report.

Jackson Police investigators say just after 11 p.m. Tuesday a man broke into a residence in the 1300 block of Fairmont Avenue.

Police say the thief was shot multiple times after he broke into the residence.

The wounded burglar fled the scene, but police located him nearby.

The man was transported to a hospital where his condition was listed as critical, but stable early Wednesday.

Police say charges are pending.
