Prosecutors said they will seek a life sentence for the man accused of kidnapping, leading police on a chase and then firing on officers with an automatic weapon, seriously wounding a Mississippi sheriff’s deputy.

Edgar Egbert had a bond hearing Tuesday in a Madison County court room. There prosecutors laid out the crimes they say Egbert committed.

Mississippi Bureau of Investigations Investigator Troy Travis gave the court a timeline for the events of Sept. 5.

Travis said Egbert’s crime spree began when he suspected his wife was having an affair with a man who had been living with the couple.

Egbert allegedly kidnapped the man at gunpoint, took him back to their house and chained him up, prompting Egbert’s wife to call the police.

As sheriff’s deputies were arriving at the home, they spotted Egbert fleeing and began to pursue him, Travis said.

As Egbert sped and endangered other motorists, law enforcement officers used devices to disable his vehicle, which wound up in a ditch.

Egbert then got out of the vehicle armed with a fully automatic rifle and began shooting at law enforcement officers.

His alleged use of a fully automatic weapon meant law enforcement officers were fighting him in a hail of gunfire. In the shootout, Madison County Deputy Brad Sullivan was struck in the head. He’s still in critical condition in the hospital.

In all, police say they found nearly 90 spent ammunition cases at the scene they believe came from Egbert’s rifle.

The judge denied Egbert’s request for a bond.
