A carjacking suspect was shot and killed by a Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office deputy Thursday afternoon.

Jefferson County Sheriff Peter Walker said Cameron L. Bennett was shot and killed by a sheriff deputy Thursday when Bennett tried to run the deputy down using her squad car.

Walker said Thursday’s incident started when Bennett had crashed a stolen vehicle outside Fayette on Mississippi 28 some time after noon Thursday. Walker said Bennett had stolen the car from his father and had “caused some damage at the family home before the crash.”

Walker said Bennett then stole another vehicle at gunpoint from a passerby.

After deputies responded to the incident approximately 7 miles east of Fayette, Walker said Bennett crashed the second stolen car and fled on foot.

“Then (Bennett) engaged with one of my deputies,” Walker said. “(Bennett) then got between my deputy and her vehicle, got in her vehicle and headed in her direction.”

Walker said the deputy fired at the vehicle, striking Bennett, who was pronounced dead at the scene.

“My deputy was forced to protect herself,” Walker said.

Walker said the Mississippi Bureau of Investigations has taken over the case. MBI is responsible for the investigation of officer-involved shootings in the state.
