An Arkansas hunter died after he was attacked by a deer he shot on a hunting trip last week.

A spokesperson with the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission said Thomas Alexander, 66, shot the animal with a muzzleloader near Yellville, Arkansas, in the Ozark Mountains last week and got out of his deer stand to check on it.

When Alexander approached the animal. the deer reportedly got up and gored Alexander several times, the spokesperson said.

Emergency personnel responded after Alexander contacted his wife and an air evacuation was requested, but the hunter stopped breathing and had to be taken to an area hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

It is unclear whether the man died of injuries sustained during the attack or from another medical condition, but no autopsy was expected to be performed. As of Saturday, wildlife officers have not yet found the deer that injured Alexander.

The accident is not an isolated one. In 2016, another hunter was gored by a buck in Ashley County in southern Arkansas.
