The rain passing through Mississippi Thursday is ushering in the coldest air so far this fall and making for what will likely be one of the coldest Halloween nights in more than 25 years.

Records with the Jackson office of the National Weather Service show the lowest high temperature on record occurred in 1993 when the high temperature only reached 43 degrees.

Today’s forecast high in Jackson is 49 degrees.

Temperatures will fall as the sun goes down, so trick-or-treaters should bundle up to stay warm.

The overnight low in Jackson is expected to be 32 degrees early Friday morning. That will be cold, bitterly cold coming off the much warmer weather Mississippi has had so far this fall.

But the overnight low won’t come close to the record for Nov. 1 of 24 degrees, also in 1993.

Much of the northern half of the state is under a freeze warning tonight.
