Few things are as frightening for late-night Mississippi drivers than the sight of deer walking along the side of the road. One study says Mississippi drivers have a reason to be more cautious of collisions with large animals.

According to State Farm, November is one of the peak months for deer collisions, especially in Mississippi. The study ranks Mississippi as one of the Top 10 states where drivers are most likely to hit an animal.

According to the study, U.S. drivers on the average have a 1 in 116 chance of a collision with an animal. The company estimates there were over 1.9 million animal collision insurance claims in the U.S. between July 1, 2018 and June 30, 2019.

West Virginia continues to top the list of states where an individual driver is most likely to run into an animal, with a likelihood of one in 38.

Ranked as a “high-risk” state for animal collisions, Mississippi drivers have a one in 61 chance of hitting  a deer or other large animal while on the road.

• Iowa
• Wyoming
• Wisconsin
• South Dakota
• Minnesota
• Michigan

The months drivers are most likely to collide with a large animal in the U.S. are (in order) November, October, and December.
