A murder suspect on the run from Mississippi was found dead after he reportedly killed a Houston area apartment resident overnight Thursday.

Roderick Bowers, 52,  was accused of killing 32-year-old Cruz Johnson and injuring another person in a shooting Sunday in Gulfport. Bowers called a Gulf Coast TV station a few days after the shooting and admitted to killing Johnson, who he said was having a relationship with the woman who he allegedly kidnapped. Bowers is the father of the woman’s three children, he told the TV station.

Bowers was wanted for homicide, aggravated kidnapping and aggravated domestic violence.

U.S. Marshals and officers with the Gulf Coast Violent Offenders Task Force had located Bowers at Spring, Texas, apartment complex.

News sources say police tried arresting Bowers when he was spotted at the complex, but he allegedly pulled a gun, pointed it at the officers and fled on foot to another nearby apartment complex.

Bowers then managed to enter one of the apartments, where a 52-year-old resident was still inside, authorities said.

When Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office SWAT officers tried entering the early Friday morning, they heard three gunshots and retreated. Officers then deployed a special camera-equipped robot to inspect the apartment and found Bowers and the resident dead inside.

Bowers called a Gulf Coast TV station a few days after the shooting and admitted to killing Johnson, who he said was having a relationship with the woman who he allegedly kidnapped. Bowers is the father of the woman’s three children, he told the TV station.

The identity of the victim in the apartment complex was not released. Authorities do not believe the victim and Bowers were related.
