A former Mississippi road worker has been arrested on charges of stealing county fuel and selling it on the black market.

The Lauderdale County Sheriff’s Department says former county road employee Jerry Glenn Morgan of Toomsuba is free on bond after being charged with embezzlement.

Chief Deputy Ward Calhoun estimates about $237,000 in diesel fuel owned by the county was taken over a two-year period.

He says there were suspicions in the past based on monitoring of an electronic program, and Morgan was arrested Friday.

It’s unclear whether Morgan has a lawyer who could speak on his behalf. Calhoun says the man was responsible for fueling and maintaining county vehicles.

Officials haven’t said who is suspected of purchasing fuel that was taken from the county.
