A 9-year-old Mississippi girl was shot in the head Tuesday and police believe an 8-year-old child pulled the trigger, local media reported.

The victim was in critical condition, the Meridian Star newspaper reported Wednesday.

Meridian police reported the children were left alone in their home with no adult supervision. The firearm was recovered on the scene, police reported and police are investigating the matter.

Their girl was initially taken to a Meridian hospital, but was later transferred to a Jackson hospital.
